The Bayside Sharks won their 3rd consecutive CanAm Cup with a convincing 39-12 victory over the Vancouver Rowing Club. Chuckanut Bay Rugby Club hosted twenty six teams at the Bellingham Rugby and Polo Club for the 29th edition of what has become the elite 7’s tournament on the west coast. Teams came from BC, Washington, Montana, Idaho and Oregon.
The Sharks advanced to the final with wins over Missoula, Montana 47-0, 33-17 over Chuckanut Bay and 26-12 over the Valley Kangaroos from Seattle. Their 43-19 win over The Ellensburg Wa. Bulls put them into the final for the 3rd year in a row. The Vancouver Rowing Club made it to the final with a 31-5 victory over Western Washington University, 33-7 upset win over #2 seeded Old Puget Sound Beach and 38-14 over Ellensburg. Their 26-19 win over Chuckanut Bay put them in the final. The Sharks jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead and went on to outscore the Rowers five trys to two. Tournament MVP honours went to Tony La Carte from Bayside. The Huna Hoggs, playing in their new look Extreme Pink Jerseys were 2-1 in their bracket and failed to advance to the medal rounds. They then took their familiar place in the ever popular End Zone Beer Garden where there was shade and lots of cold beverages to be had.
The B Division title went to the United RFC as they came out on top of the Tacoma Nomads RFC 19-14. The Under 19 Division saw the Chuckanut Bay Steamers beat the #1 seeded Bayside Young Sharks 14-12. The Steamers were led by Shawn Pittman and Chad Clark, both members of the US National U19 squad. Shawn Pittman was named MVP for his performance.
The 30th Annual CanAm 7’s will held July 12, 2008. Clubs should mark the date and plan to come down for this great 7’s event.
